How zakat is calculated

Zakat is due at 2.5% on wealth you have held for one lunar (hijri) year, provided the total is above the nisab. Zakatable wealth includes cash and bank balances, the market value of gold and silver, money owed to you that you expect back, and business stock. Personal-use items such as your home, car and household goods are not counted.

The nisab is the value of either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Because the silver nisab is usually lower, using it means more people qualify to give — which is why most scholars recommend it.

Example

On Rs 2,500,000 of net zakatable wealth, zakat works out to Rs 62,500. This tool checks your total against the nisab automatically before applying the 2.5%.
